Ryan Jacobson and his wife Lora have taken a unique approach to raising funds to adopt a child: they’ve published a book.  After five years of marriage without children, including more than two years of infertility treatment, the couple decided to adopt. But the cost of adopting a child is significant — more than $15,000! So Ryan took matters into his own hands: He wrote a book and self-published it.

“We know that we have to come up with the money, but we aren’t really comfortable just asking for donations. So Lora and I decided to put our gifts to good use,” said Ryan. “My gift happens to be writing, so this is what I did.”

Just what Ryan did is put together a 68-page “chapter book,” ideal for children in elementary school, primarily Grades 2 and 3. The book, titled Santa Claus: Super Spy: The Case of the Florida Freeze, is about two children who join Santa Claus on an adventure to save Florida from Jack Frost, the story’s villain.

“The book is also illustrated wonderfully by Erica Belkholm [a college student from Morris],” added Ryan. “I was blown away when I saw her drawings.”
